Major Arcana
The Devil
Yes or no: No
Symbolism
A horned, bat-winged figure crouches on a dark pedestal, one hand raised and the other holding a downward-pointing torch. An inverted pentagram glows above his head. Chained loosely to the pedestal stand a nude man and woman, each with small horns and tails, the woman's tipped with grapes and the man's with flame. The chains around their necks are slack enough to lift off. The dark figure represents our shadow side: cravings, fears, and habits that hold us captive. The two humans echo The Lovers, now caught in unhealthy attachments. The loose chains are the most important detail, showing that freedom is possible once we notice we have it.
Upright meaning
- attachment
- temptation
- unhealthy patterns
- materialism
- shadow self
The Devil is a card about the things that bind us, often without our full awareness. It can point to unhealthy habits, addictive patterns, toxic relationships, or an obsession with money, status, or pleasure. Sometimes it is simply about fear or negative beliefs that keep you stuck. This card is not here to shame you. It shines a light on the chains so you can see them clearly. Notice that the figures in the image could lift their chains off at any time; the trap is partly an illusion. When this card appears, ask yourself what has been controlling you lately. What do you reach for when you feel stressed or empty? Naming it is the first step. The Devil reminds you that you hold more power over your choices than you might believe.
Reversed meaning
- breaking free
- release
- reclaiming power
- awareness
Reversed, The Devil is often a hopeful sign. It suggests you are starting to recognize and break free from something that has been holding you back, whether that is a habit, a relationship, or a limiting belief. You may be reclaiming your independence and feeling a fresh sense of personal power. This process is not always smooth; old patterns can tug at you, and it takes honesty to keep moving forward. In some cases, the reversed Devil can also mean confronting your shadow side, the parts of yourself you would rather not look at. That is brave work. Be patient and kind to yourself as you loosen old chains. Support from friends, professionals, or communities can make the journey easier. Every small act of freedom counts.
Love
Upright
In love, The Devil can point to intense attraction, but also to possessiveness, codependency, or a relationship built more on need than on genuine care. Notice whether you feel free or trapped, and be honest about any unhealthy dynamics.
Reversed
Reversed, you may be breaking free of a toxic relationship or unhealthy pattern in how you love. This is a time to rebuild self-worth and set boundaries. Healthier connections become possible as you reclaim your power.
Money
Upright
Financially, watch for overspending, debt cycles, or chasing material things to fill an emotional gap. Look at where money is controlling you instead of the other way around.
Reversed
Reversed, you may be breaking a debt cycle or loosening the grip of compulsive spending. Keep going. Small, consistent changes in your habits can lead to real financial freedom.
Career
Upright
At work, you might feel stuck in a job for the paycheck alone or tempted to compromise your values. Recognize what is keeping you there and consider whether those chains are as tight as they seem.
Reversed
Reversed, you may be freeing yourself from a draining job or a toxic workplace dynamic. Trust your growing clarity, and take steps toward work that respects your values and energy.
Advice from this card
Write down one habit or attachment that leaves you feeling worse afterward. Next time the urge comes up, pause and ask what you truly need in that moment. Swapping in a kinder alternative, even once, proves the chains are looser than they look.
